Part I - Self-Assessment

Strengths: I am an experienced and successful teacher and researcher in quality, operations, and supply chain management. Following is from my bio:

XXX is a professor and author, in the field of operations, quality, and supply chain management.  Among XXX’s areas of expertise are strategic quality management, supply chain quality, service quality, teamwork, quality in government, and operations technology management.

XXX is Area Leader and Associate Professor of Quality and Supply Chain Management at Brigham Young University and has experience in manufacturing, financial services, and international oil exploration.  XXX has consulted for a number of companies including Hewlett-Packard, Trus Joist Macmillan, Cutler-Hammer/Eaton Corp., Heinz Frozen Foods, US West Corporation, Healthwise Corporation, and the United States Department of Energy.

XXX served on the 1996 and 1997 Boards of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. XXX is on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Operations Management, Quality Management Journal, Benchmarking for Quality Management, and the Quality Observer.  He has published over 50 quality-related articles in journals such as the Decision Sciences, International Journal of Production Research, the Journal of Quality Management, the International Journal of Quality and Reliability Management, the Quality Management Journal,  and Quality Progress.

His most recent book is entitled, Quality Management: An Integrative Approach  (Prentice Hall) and he is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in The World.  XXX is founder of <http://www.xxx.org>, was awarded the ASBSU 2000 Outstanding Faculty Award, and received the prestigious 2002 Decision Sciences Institute Instructional Innovation Award.  He is currently serving as guest editor for a special issue on supply chain quality for the Journal of Operations Management.

Skills and competencies: I am organized and very focused.  This is needed to perform the tasks that are before me.

Research interests: Quality management.  As will be discussed later, I am working on a number of projects.  I have published many articles and made many presentations.

Citizenship opportunities:  I am the newly appointed Area Leader in Supply Chain Management.  I will oversee a movement towards global supply chain management.  We are charged with making this program viable.

Areas I wish to develop: I need to better understanding decision making at BYU.  I also need to continue my stream of research.

Part II - Professional Goals and Plan

Teaching Goals: To continue to perform well in teaching supply chain and quality management by making minor improvements to my courses.

Teaching Plan:  I am not teaching in the fall and will teach quality management in the winter.  My quality management course was very well received.  I plan to work on two aspects of the class.  I want to work with the Center for Instructional Development on improving the first day of class experience to really start off on the right foot.  I also need to develop instructions for the student projects that are more concise.  The area where I scored the poorest was in time expended outside of class where I was double the university average.  This points to a need to rethink my syllabus as well.

Research Goals: I plan to submit the following papers for publication to A journals in the following year:

XXX, “Does Six Sigma Result in Better Financial and Operational Results?” to be submitted to Decision Sciences.

XXX. and YYY, “Evaluating the Effectiveness of the Quality Awards in Driving Financial Performance: A Tautology,” to be submitted to the Journal of Operations Management.

XXX and ZZZ, “What is Supply Chain Quality?” to be submitted to the Journal of Operations Management.

Research Plan: The first paper is now being edited by the faculty writing center.  The second paper in the analysis phase and is half-written.  The third paper is in the writing stage and will be submitted during the summer.  I am also editing a special issue of the Journal of Operations Management and will write the lead article for that special issue.

Citizenship Goals: I will serve as Area Leader in Supply Chain Management.

Citizenship Plan:  I will work very closely with my Department Leader and others in my group to set reasonable goals for attainment.  At that point, a plan will be put into place for achieving these goals.  I have requested additional clerical support so that I am freed up to work on research.  I plan to continue to do what I have done in recent years as I served as department chair in my prior university.

Part III - Relationship Between Goals and University Aspirations, Needs

Teaching: I have made a strong effort to implement gospel principles in my class.  This has taken the form of class gems.  These are thoughts the students present in class integrating gospel thought with the topics covered in class.  I plan to continue to be an example.  My freequality.org website is another vehicle in which I teach students to create opportunities to do service for others.

Research: It was President Dallin Oaks who clarified the relationship between scholarship and achieving the ends of BYU.  I have always been interested in being an internationally known scholar in quality management.  This will improve the prominence of our program and create global opportunities to strengthen the church around the world.

Citizenship: If I am effective as area leader, we will increase the global reach of our supply chain management program.  We will also create national rankings for our program.  More importantly, we will provide international opportunities for our international and foreign language-speaking students.

Resource Needs: I have negotiated the resources I need with our dean and department chairman.  I plan to use the $300 grant from your department to buy supplies and videos for teaching my quality management course.

Part IV - Summary of Goals

Since I am an experienced faculty member, my faculty development plan is a bit unusual.  My goal is to reassure the leadership in the Marriott School that I will continue my stream of research, do an outstanding job in the classroom, and be a leader in the college.  I believe the above enumerated goals will accomplish these ends and put me in a good position to receive continuing status and full professorship in my third year.
