Part I Self-Assessment
A. Personal Background
Academic Background
Library Experience
B. Strengths
I believe my greatest strength is a strong desire to excel as a chemical sciences librarian and to provide the best possible service I can offer the university.
I am committed to lifelong learning and improvement. As my own knowledge and experience increases, I am more effective as a librarian and more capable of meeting the needs of library users.
I have a service-oriented nature and love working with people. In a public service position such as mine, this is essential to job satisfaction and successful patron relations.
I maintain a positive enthusiasm in the midst of change and challenges and try to instill that enthusiasm in others. The electronic revolution taking place within libraries makes this a critical attribute.
I have an abiding desire to be influential within the library, community and profession.
C. Skills and Competencies
Because of my undergraduate studies, I have a solid foundation in the subjects of chemistry and biochemistry.
I am competent in teaching and searching the range of databases offered at the Science Reference Desk.
I have talents in the areas of teaching and presenting.
I believe I possess favorable interpersonal skills and work well with various personalities.
I am adept at searching online databases from DIALOG and STN International.
I have the benefit of prior associations with many of the faculty in the chemistry department.
D. Research interests
Library use instruction strategies
User studies
Online searching techniques and technology
Faculty status for academic librarians
Value of the monograph in the sciences
E. Citizenship opportunities
Upholding the BYU Code of Honor
Establishing effective relationships that will benefit my colleagues in the Science Reference Department and the faculty in those departments on campus for which I am responsible
Library and university committees as invited
Membership and active participation in professional associations
American Library Association (ALA)Association of College and Research Libraries Division (ACRL)Science and Technology Section (STS)
Instruction Section (IS)
American Chemical Society (ACS)Division of Chemical Information (CINF)Special Libraries Association (SLA)
Chemistry Division
Note: It is neither feasible nor desirable for me to actively participate in all three of these associations. While I am currently a member of ALA, I am most interested in the Division of Chemical Information of the American Chemical Society and am working toward obtaining membership in that association. I plan to attend conferences to determine to which association I can best contribute.
F. Areas I wish to develop
I would like to build my collection development skills. I feel weakest in this area of my responsibilities. I am most interested in learning the particulars of conducting collection assessments and familiarizing myself with the collections for which I am responsible.
I desire to enhance my subject knowledge base. I feel fairly comfortable with my knowledge and understanding of chemistry at this point. However, I feel the need to increase my knowledge in the areas of chemical engineering, molecular biology, and food science and nutrition.
I need to enhance my skills in online searching. I have a foundation in searching both DIALOG and STN International databases, but I feel that I can better serve library patrons if I obtain further training. I am particularly interested in developing online searching skills in STN International.
I wish to develop my teaching skills in the library use instruction context.
I want to work on developing relationships with the faculty in the departments on campus for which I am responsible.

PART III Relationship Between Individual Goals and University Aspirations, and Resource Needs
A. Relationship between individual goals and university aspirations
The mission of Brigham Young University is "to assist individuals in their quest for perfection and eternal life." The Harold B. Lee Library supports the mission of the university through its mission statement, which is "to acquire, organize, preserve, and make readily available collections of scholarly and related materials in all media; to assist its patrons in finding and using information available at the University and elsewhere; and to encourage lifelong learning." In accordance with this statement, the library desires librarians who characterize commitment to the standards of university citizenship, library expertise and contributions to the profession. The creation of this development plan relied heavily on the expectations and standards outlined in the "Policies and Procedures for Appointment, Rank Advancement, and Continuing Status" for the Harold B. Lee Library and the job description for the Chemical Sciences Subject Specialist so that the goals outlined herein correlate closely to both my departments and the universitys overall missions and focuses for the future.
